New Media Art

Critical Themes

Cinematic Narrative

Experimentalism

The first photo I chose best represents, in my opinion, the critical theme of New Media Art. Today’s world is filled with media that is constantly progressing our society further and further, continuously introducing the question of, “what is next?” For this reason there is constantly something new on the societal horizon, which I feel is well represented by the blurred horizon in this image.

The second photo here tells a more direct story than any other image in my portfolio. Not only does it imply a certain level of both emotional and physical feeling, but it also poses a variety of questions, leaving the audience with a certain level of understanding as well as wonderment. For these aforementioned reasons, I find that this photo well represents the critical theme of Cinematic Narrative.

Finally, my third photo was one in which, rather than necessarily asking the audience a question, I more so I asked myself a question: at what point are the limits to what can be done with a camera reached? During this section of the Still Image Project, I began toying with what types of images I can capture to an extent that I really hadn’t ever gone to before. I was playing around with lighting, subject, and camera angle, and through a variety of trial-and-error shooting, I ultimately produced the third image installed here. This image is, in my opinion, an excellent example of Experimentalism for a variety of reasons. For one thing, I find it enjoyable to know that the actual setting in which this photograph was captured in no way resembles the image itself. Additionally, I find that it develops a great deal of curiosity in the audience and ultimately was a successful attempt at pushing the limits of experimentation through photography.
